LIME
DANCING All the
pieces in this work are made using one traditional template call the
‘Axe Handle’. I hand pieced them during road trips over a 3 year
period. By
stitching 6 of the pieces together a flower-like round shape is
created. When I had made over a hundred of these ‘flowers,’ I began
arranging them on the design wall. I moved them about and switched
them around for days, looking for a pleasing organization. As I
fiddled with the pieces, I considered squaring the piece in a
typical ‘quilt’ shape. However, the irregular edge seemed to add to
the rhythm and movement of the work. It would be an extra challenge
to finish the edges this way. More importantly, how would I support
the edges that jutted out? The
solution I cam up with was to put template plastic across the top
and down the sides that would not hang smoothly without additional
support. I machine quilted the piece in a grid pattern, sewing thru
the template plastic. It has
turned out to be a favorite piece. I love the colors and how the
whole piece flows.
